A Breath of Filtered Air: 2018 Toyota Tacoma Cold Air Intake Install

A Breath of Filtered Air: 2018 Toyota Tacoma Cold Air Intake Install

So if you’ve got yourself a Toyota Tacoma with the 3.5-liter V6, congratulations, because you’re probably loving that truck. However, you might be finding that it doesn’t make quite as much power as you’d like. An aftermarket cold air intake system is one of the best ways to increase airflow into the combustion chamber. With the easy installation of a performance air intake kit, your truck will see a fuel economy and horsepower gain as well as better throttle response.

Volant performance makes a great addition to your truck with one of the best cold air intake kits for the 2016+ V6 Tacoma. One of the most unique things about Volant’s product line is that they allow you to choose from three different filter types depending on your power needs and driving conditions. The part we are installing today is Volant’s performance air intake with their unique PowerCore filter which is an off-road ready dry filter. It offers high-quality particulate filtration and high flow to make sure that your truck gets all the clean, cool air it needs.

Necessary Tools

  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • 3/8″ ratchet with 6″ extension
  • 10mm, 12mm sockets

Installation Guide

Step 1: Remove the plastic engine cover by lifting from the front and tugging gently.

Step 2: Remove the PCV hose by squeezing the spring clamp, sliding it up the hose, and carefully pulling the hose off of the intake tube.

Step 3: Unplug the MAF and move its wiring harness to the side. Push the tab in before pulling the plug from its socket, and use a flathead screwdriver to open the retainer that holds the wiring harness against the MAF itself.

Step 4: Use your 10mm socket or a flathead screwdriver to loosen the clamp around the throttle body and slide the intake piping off of the throttle body.

Step 5: Undo the 2 clips that hold the intake pipe onto the airbox, and remove the intake piping. Put the old intake in a “safe place.”

Step 6: Remove the air filter and use your extension and 12mm socket to remove the three bolts that hold the stock airbox in place.

Step 7: Reinstall the third, outside bolt in its original place, if you don’t want to keep it somewhere outside the engine bay. The Volant air intake you are installing only requires two bolts.

Step 8: Place the new Volant airbox where the OEM one sat, and install the two bolts that hold it in the engine compartment.

Step 9: Attach the Volant filter to the airbox using the supplied 10mm bolts and the three holes on the right-hand side of the airbox. These don’t need to be fully torqued, just as long as they’re snug.

Step 10: Slide the silicone coupler over the airbox flange, and use a hose clamp to secure it.

Step 11: Insert the new intake tube into the silicone coupler on the airbox side, and then slide it over the flange on the throttle body. Make sure it is oriented so that the PCV hose can be easily reconnected to the intake. Tighten the hose clamps on either side to secure it.

Step 12: Reconnect the PCV hose, positioning the spring clamp over the stem.

Step 13: Find the “safe place” where you put the stock intake system, and use a phillips screwdriver to remove the old MAF (positioned just behind the airbox and in front of the flex pipe).

Step 14: Carefully use the new screws and supplied rubber washers to attach the MAF to your new intake pipe. Make sure you’re not over-tightening these screws, as you could strip the threads on the intake!

Step 15: Reconnect the MAF plug by simply plugging it back in. The new intake doesn’t have a mounting point for the cable, but you can leave it free or use zipties to keep it secure.

Step 16: Use the four supplied bolts and a phillips screwdriver to install the clear cover over your filter, sealing it from the elements.

Step 17: Lastly, reinstall the OEM plastic engine cover– or not! It’s your choice.

Congratulations!

You have successfully installed your new Volant performance intake. Enjoy your new engine sound and improved engine performance thanks to cooler air and better flow!
