ACT Clutch Install on the 06-11 Subaru WRX

Our buddy Zach has the 2011 WRX with the EJ255 engine, and he’s making a little bit more horsepower than stock. He’s got an exhaust, an intake, and a basic tune, but he’s planning to make over 400 wheel horsepower when he does his intercooler, turbo, fueling, and custom tune upgrades. In order to handle that power, he’s gonna need a clutch. So we’re installing an ACT HD Street Sprung Clutch, which is going to handle all that extra power and we have made a video talking about all the features of this clutch.

In this article, we’re going to show you how to install this clutch step by step, and you can buy this clutch at Motoroso.com. Let’s get started.

INSTALL GUIDE VIDEO:

You can either pull the engine or you can pull the transmission. We personally think that pulling the engine, even though it’s a few more steps, is actually faster and easier to access the clutch, so that’s what we’re going to be doing. We’re going to skip the steps for pulling the engine out because if you’re a Subaru owner, you’ve probably already pulled the engine out before. If you haven’t, there are plenty of videos online on how to do that. Once the engine is out, we’ll focus on how to install the clutch.

Tools you’ll need for the clutch install include:

  • 8, 10, 12, 14, and 15mm sockets and a ratchet to match
  • Pry Bar
  • Engine Hoist
  • Hammer

  1. After removing the engine, use a 12mm socket to remove the pressure plate from the flywheel.
  1. If your clutch is worn or heat cycled to an extreme degree, a hammer or a mallet might be needed to separate the clutch from the flywheel.
  1. Remove the (8) 15mm bolts for the flywheel and remove the flywheel.
  1. Clean the bell housing with brake cleaner, and then inspect the rear main seal.
  1. Clean out the transmission bell housing and remove the old throwout bearing.
  1. Use the supplied grease and apply to the input shaft where the throwout bearing will ride.
  1. Install a new throwout bearing and make sure it does not pull off the fork.
  1. Install the new lightweight ACT flywheel onto the crankshaft, reusing the OEM bolts and torquing them down to 56 ft/lbs. in a crisscross pattern.
  1. Make sure to clean the flywheel and clutch surfaces with brake cleaner.
  1. Pay attention to the orientation of the clutch marked as “transmission side” and “flywheel side.”
  1. Use the supplied alignment tool to slide the clutch into place.
  1. Install the pressure plate using the (6) 10mm bolts, torquing them down in a crisscross pattern first to 11 ft/lbs., and then to 28 ft/lbs.
  1. With your new clutch in, you’re ready to reinstall the engine.

That wraps up our installation guide for the ACT HD Street Sprung Clutch on this 2011 WRX with the EJ255 engine. The torque specs are specific to the EGA255 engine, but the installation process is pretty much similar across almost every Subaru. Now, if you want to buy this clutch, you can shop for it at Motoroso.com. You can also shop for over a million other top name-brand products on our marketplace.
