By Alcon Front Big Brake Kit for the 2021+ Ford Bronco
In this article, we’re going to take a close-up look at the brand new Alcon big brake kit for the brand new Ford Bronco. At this time, there is only a front system because they have that electric rear parking brake there is no rear system which means you’ll just be replacing the front brakes with this kit and that’s okay because 80% of your braking force is upfront anyway so it ought to get the job done.

The process is pretty straightforward and if you’re familiar with tools you can do this at home in your driveway quite easily.

The stock brakes on the Bronco aren’t terrible, but if you’re going to be upgrading the 37-inch tires or you’re going to be doing high-speed long desert runs or both of those things are going to be happening, you definitely want to consider upgrading the braking performance over the stock brakes because they’re definitely going to be heat issues and stopping power is really really important to avoid those nasty pucker moments you might get with OE brakes. Additionally, those larger 37-inch tires have a lot more leverage over the brakes and that can definitely build up a ton more heat and those little two-piston calipers may not hold up to that punishment just depending on how hard you’re going. Beyond the performance advantages, these beautiful red calipers are going to look nice peeking out from behind a set of aftermarket wheels.
Alcon is one of the leaders in off-road braking performance not just because they pack a bunch of high-performance features into their systems, but they always do us the deed of making sure that their systems fit under 17-inch wheels which is important because 17-inch wheels are gonna be the most popular size for most serious off-road builds. We’re also going to be doing a braking distance test before and after these brakes to show the gain and performance and you’re going to be able to see that in our installation guide video.
The Rotor
Let’s start by taking a look at the rotor in the package. Now your stock rotors on the Bronco are going to be 311mm and this kit is going to bump you up to a 350mm rotor which is an additional inch and a half in overall rotor diameter — that’s a lot of extra leverage to help with that braking performance but luckily still fits under that 17” wheel.
It’s also made from ductile iron which is some of the best iron that you can use and that’s going to stand up to additional heat punishment it’s also going to help prevent warping and help it last longer. Since it is a two-piece rotor, if the rotor does warp after really intense extreme use, you can actually just swap out the disc itself on the carrier which helps save a little bit of money in overall long-term maintenance. It’s also a vented rotor which means the air is going to be able to flow up in between the sides of the rotors to help keep this whole rotor cool and it features its J-hook slots which have a nice sharp little edge on them so that as the pad and the rotor pass past each other it’s going to shave just a micron of material off the face of the pad keeping that pad nice and fresh mated to the rotor.
The Caliper
Let’s move on to the star of the show and that’s going to be these massive, beautiful, red calipers. These are also made out of ductile iron whereas on other brakes you’re sometimes going to find an aluminum caliper. For an off-road application that ductile iron is going to be way tougher and help resist impacts that can happen off-road. Now, this is a six-piston caliper your stock caliper on your Bronco is only two pistons so this is going to be a dramatic increase in the amount of force that can be exerted on the rotor resulting in less pedal pressure to get the same kind of performance, but also a much higher total potential for braking forces.
In addition to that, it’s going to house a pad that is more than double the size of the pad that comes on your Bronco giving that additional surface area better heat management, but obviously just way more friction and that’s going to help bring this braking performance up to the level that you’re going to need. This is also an epoxy-based paint that is done over an acid-etched finish which means it’s going to stay bonded, it’s going to resist corrosion, and it’s going to have maximum impact protection overall.
The Pads
Coming back to the pads these are going to be a high friction pad compound that’s going to be fine for street use meaning you’re going to have a nice cold bite, it’s going to work just fine without a lot of noise, but it’ll stand up to the punishment out of those high-temperature environments. This is still probably not what we would call a racing pad so if you’re going to be doing some racing in your Bronco let’s go ahead and get you a high-performance racing pad, but these are going to be a great blend of street and high performance.
