AMP Research PowerStep Xtreme Drop Steps for the RAM 1500 and TRX

In this article, we’re going to take a close-up look at the PowerSteps from AMP Research that fit the 2019 and up RAM 1500 and TRX and we’re going to be installing this on our friend Kevin’s beautiful new RAM TRX.

Most well-appointed trucks these days are going to come with some stock running boards, but for those that have trouble getting in and out of the truck, or especially if you’ve lifted or put on bigger wheels and tires, sometimes getting in and out of the truck can be a bit too much work. For those that want a cleaner look and a much lower drop step without sacrificing ground clearance, the AMP Research PowerStep might be the perfect solution. In the video below, we include an installation guide so you can follow along and see just how easy these are to install.

How the PowerSteps Work

If you’re not familiar the way that this works is that the steps will sense when the door of the truck opens and it will drop the step down making it easy to get in and out. Then when you close the door, it’ll tuck up nicely and out of the way. The AMP Research PowerStep come in three different configurations: their standard PowerStep, the PowerStep XL, and the PowerStep Xtreme.

The standard PowerStep is a pretty simple product. It drops down 13 inches below the door sill and it features a single motor on each side of the vehicle. The PowerStep XL is great for lifted applications or those looking for the maximum amount of drop step because it drops an additional 3 inches giving you a total of 16 inches drop from the door sill. The PowerStep Xtreme, just like the PowerStep standard, drops 13 inches from the door sill but it features two motors per side for added strength and longevity. The joints pivots and motors on the Xtreme steps are all sealed a little bit extra to protect against harsh elements like water, mud, dirt, and sand. What we’ve chosen here for our friend Kevin’s 2021 RAM TRX is the PowerStep Xtreme because that’s the fitting step for a TRX.

The PowerStep Xtreme

These steps feature those four motors that we mentioned which are sealed additionally against the elements and connect to these four die-cast aluminum articulating arms. The linkage arms feature stainless steel pins and pivots as well as having the joints PTFE lined to help them operate smoothly and resist wear in those harsh conditions. The step itself is also made from light but very strong die-cast aluminum and all of the components are then powder coated in a nice satin black to give a nice clean appearance that fits any vehicle. Now, what makes the PowerStep Xtreme a little bit different, is that the steps themselves are coated in an even more durable and even more grippy powder coat finish that is going to help keep grip in those wet, icy, and overall slippery conditions as well as stand up to additional punishment on worksites and nasty environments.

All three versions of the steps have a 600-pound weight capacity and they also feature integrated LED lighting to help illuminate the steps when they’re deployed. Of course, they also feature all the necessary wiring harnesses and control modules that all wire into the OBD II port that tells the system when the door has been opened and to deploy and close the steps when necessary.
