Powered Drop Step Options for the 2-Door Bronco

Two months back we made a video about the Rockslide Engineering step sliders which is a full power drop step as well as a really sturdy rock slider that can withstand severe off-road punishment so if you’re going to be wheeling your Bronco hard and want the power drop step, we recommend checking that video out down below. If you’re not going to be off-roading as aggressively and you’re not worried about getting that extra protection for your Bronco, then the AMP Research PowerStep might be the right product for you. Now, there really are only two power drop-step options for the two-door Bronco which is what we’re going to be installing these on. You’ve got Rockslide Engineering and AMP Research. Now the AMP Research is the only option that is the same product for both the four-door and the two-door the difference is you just trim the step down a little shorter.

The Offerings from AMP Research

AMP Research is one of the largest and most well-known manufacturers of power drop steps and their products are designed engineered and manufactured right here in the USA and that’s something we definitely care a lot about. They also usually offer three different variations of the drop steps they offer: the regular PowerStep, the PowerStep XL, and the PowerStep Xtreme. At the time of making this article the only offering for the full-size Bronco is their regular original PowerStep, if they do add the XL or the Xtreme offering later on we’ll go ahead and put links to those here as well and probably make another video so check out our YouTube channel for that.

How the Steps Work

The way these steps work is that it’s going to sense when the door is opened and the electric motor will automatically deploy the step a full 13 inches from the door sill, and of course, it comes out a few inches as well making it nice and easy to get in and out of any stock or lifted Bronco. The kit also includes LED lighting that will illuminate the steps and the ground to make sure you don’t slip and hurt yourself. A few seconds after you close the door it’ll close the step right up against the body of the truck and it sits nicely with a low profile and looks very clean. It will also give you better ground clearance than you’d have with a traditional running board that comes on this Bronco or other static drop steps making it better for off-road excursions by reducing the chance that you’re going to bang these on the trail. If you do, these stand the potential to damage because they are not designed to be a rock slider.

The Features of the PowerStep

This system includes these die-cast aluminum articulating arms which can support up to 500lbs. They also feature stainless steel pins for longevity and to resist corrosion, and the joints are PTFE lined to make sure you get smooth operation and long-term durability. The aluminum step is coated in a military-grade high-grip powder coating that not only looks great, but it’s going to stand up to the elements and will help maintain traction in bad weather conditions. The articulating arms and the steps are deployed by a single motor on each side and those motors feature a protective plastic housing that’s going to help keep the gunk and the grime from the trail out of the motor.

Of course, the kit also features a full OEM-grade wiring harness that’s going to make the installation nice and easy and it includes the LED lights that mount on the underside of the vehicle to illuminate the steps. It also features a weather-resistant control module that mounts in the engine bay which can stand up to the temperatures of the engine bay but also any sort of weather conditions. That control module controls the steps and is connected through the OBD II port and that is nice because that eliminates the need for installing any sort of door magnets making the installation a real breeze.

How it Works on the 2-Door Bronco

Since this kit works for both the 2-door and 4-door Broncos, if you’ve got a 2-door Bronco the way that this works is you’re going to need to cut the length of the step down which is a pretty simple thing to do. The cap comes off, then you can cut the step down, and put the cap back on — pretty straightforward.

If you would like to buy these steps we’re going to put a link below and again it’s the same item for either the four-door or the two-door.
