VIDEO: FRONT AND REAR SWAY BAR KIT FOR FORD F-150

As you may have seen from some of our other videos, the Motoroso F-150 is a 2015 EcoBoost F-150 quad cab XLT, and it’s got a bunch of great mods on it, including an icon vehicle dynamics, full suspension upgrade kit, and it performs fantastic. Off-road, this suspension compliance is amazing and it’s awesome. However, we do a lot of street driving and a lot of towing, and we noticed that there’s definitely some body roll, and the trailer can push us around a little bit because of that new, more compliant suspension. So the ticket to improving that cornering performance and that towing stability is a sway bar kit. When it comes to sway bars for trucks and Jeeps, there’s definitely one brand that stands out, and that is Hellwig Suspension. And we called our friends over at Hellwig and we told them what we were trying to accomplish and they recommended that we go with kit number 7704 on the front and 7743 on the rear.

And this is the kit that’s set up for an F-150 with around a 4”-6” lift kit. There is a different rear part number if you got less than a 4” lift or your stock, so make sure you’re paying attention to the part numbers. When you make that decision. The kit in total is going to set you back around $1,000 and you can always check out Motoroso.com to find the best price on these two sway bars. So let’s talk about what comes in the kit.

Increased Thickness

Sway bars perform their function by helping manage the distribution and transfer of weight through turns, preventing body roll. And the main factor here is how torsionally stiff the sway bar and bar thickness are. Your sway bars on your stock F-150 are going to be 36mm in the front and 24mm in the rear—if you even have one. Our F-150 doesn’t actually have a rear sway bar, but this Hellwig kit comes with a 38mm front and a 26mm rear. Those extra 2mm of bar thickness are gonna really help improve the torsional stiffness and help control that body roll.

Super High Quality Materials

Beyond the thickness of the bar, one of the other major factors to torsional stiffness is going to be the material that the bar’s made out of. This is where Hellwig really sets a new standard. They use 4140 hot-formed forge Chromoly steel, which is essentially spring steel. And there is not much better material out there that you could use for a product like this. This is not a tube—this is a solid bar—so this thing is incredibly, torsionally stiff.

Included Lateral Locks

Another really nice feature of this sway bar kit is the included clamp-on lateral locks. You need those because a sway bar can slide in its bushings and that can reduce the effective torsional stiffness of the bar. So the lateral locks clamp-on, butted up right against the bushings, and they stop that side-to-side movement to maximize the torsional rigidity and performance of your new sway bar kit. They also help reduce any premature wear on those bushings.

Adjustable Sway Bars

One of the best features of this Hellwig kit is going to be the adjustability. Now on the rear kit, you have two points of adjustability. First, where the sway link connects to the bar, you have three mounting holes on each side. If you put it in the furthest out hole, that’s going to give the most leverage over the bar and the lowest torsional stiffness you’re going to get out of this sway bar, which is still going to be much more than stock. If you put it all the way on the inside, that’s the least amount of leverage and the maximum torsional stiffness you’re going to get. The whole point here is you can tune the bar to be as stiff as you like it to and control exactly how it performs.

Adjustable Sway Bar Links

The second point of adjustability is going to be on the actual sway links themselves. And this is about adjusting for the ride height of the vehicle.

Durability

And lastly, because Hellwig prides itself on making some of the best products in the automotive aftermarket, they apply a powder coated hammer tone finish, which in my opinion, they might as well call bulletproof because this is not going to take any damage to the underside of your vehicle, in fact, this is probably going to outlast your truck.
